“Kill your darlings, kill your darlings,
even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler’s heart, kill your darlings.”

– Stephen King

“Editing might be a bloody trade, but knives aren’t the exclusive property of butchers. Surgeons use them too.”

– Blake Morrison

“Will you tell me my fault, frankly as to yourself, for I had rather wince, than die.
Men do not call the surgeon to commend the bone, but to set it, Sir.”
– Emily Dickinson

“Reread, rewrite, reread, rewrite. If it still doesn’t work, throw it away.

which have everything in them except the life they need.”
– Helen Dunmore

KILLED DARLINGS FROM

CHAPTER 4

I still think this chapter is fun, but it is predominantly fluff and I decided that there was already more than enough character development and backstory in chapters 1-3 and that it was time to get to the main event.

CHAPTER 8

This is from several drafts ago, back when A Venom Vice was still called Jack of Hearts, Bel’s name was Belindaleolindarne, and the story was more of a caricature of medieval fantasy than it was a story in its own right.
